Rare Thomas Byles 9" American Pewter Plate, c. 1711-1771

A rare 9" plate by Thomas Byles of Newport Rhode Island and Philadelphia Pennsylvania.  Originally trained in
Boston, Thomas began his career in Newport around 1711.  At some point and certainly by 1738, he was
pewtering in Philadelphia. He died in Philadelphia in 1770, and his inventory and equipment was certified by
William Will and Benjamin Harbeson Jr. (see Laughlin Appendix II, pages 156-158) in 1771.  Despite the
extensiveness of his business inventory and equipment, very little of his pewter is known.

The plate is in fine overall condition, with excellent as-struck touches (J -66).
