Roswell Gleason Marked Pewter Sugar Bowl c. 1835-1850
An excellent condition marked eight-panel pewter double-handled sugar bowl by Roswell Gleason of Dorchester
Massachusetts, 1822-1871.
The sugar bowl stands about 8-1/4" to the top of the original paint wooden finial. The base diameter is 3-1/2". The
handles are very similar to a known Sheldon & Feltman Albany New York sugar bowl (see Wolf An American
Pewter Collection #607). Paneled design tea sets were quite popular in the 19th century. Massachusetts makers
Taunton Britannia Manufacturing Co. and Leonard Reed & Barton, among others, were known to have made
paneled sets.
18th century sugar bowls are rarely marked. Although much more prevalent, marked sugar bowls in the 19th
century are also fairly scarce. In excellent overall condition with no repairs. A few dings and corrosion spots on
the handles. The body and lid are in superb condition.
