Jehiel Johnson 7-7/8" American Pewter Plate, c. 1805-1825

An excellent marked (J-172)  scarce American pewter 7-7/8" plate made by Jehiel Johnson of Middletown
Connecticut and Fayetteville North Carolina.

Born in Middletown, it is believed Jehiel trained under William Danforth. For a time, Jehiel was in a pewtering
partnership with Jacob Eggleston. Ultimately, like Jacob, Jehiel Johnson became a "Connecticut traveller",
traversing to Fayetteville North Carolina in search of greater market opportunities (see JCT
Connecticut Pewter
and Pewterers
and Scarborough Carolina Metalworkers).   Jehiel died in Middletown in 1833.  Only flatware is
known to have been made by this scarce maker.

Aside from some general usage wear like knife and fork marks, the plate is in fine condition.  Chatter marks are
evident.
