J.B. Woodbury Lozenge Font Whale Oil Lamp, c. 1830-1840
An excellent condition whale oil lamp, marked by J.B. Woodbury of Beverly Massachusetts and Philadelphia
Pennsylvania, 1830-1840. The lamp stands approximately 7-1/2" tall (not including burner height), with a base
diameter of 3-3/4". This lamp closely approximates forms marked by Roswell Gleason of Dorchester
Massachusetts. It is conceivable that, for a time early in his career, Mr. Woodbury purchased lamps or lamp
parts from Mr. Gleason. The font itself differs slightly from the Gleason examples. The lamp has the straight-line
name touch mark J-294.
